Sports Grant

Sports Grant

The sports premium grant is provided jointly by the departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and is given to schools to improve provision of Physical Education (P.E.) and sport in primary schools. Primary schools receive a lump sum of money, plus an amount based on the number of pupils in the school.

At TMBSS, we believe that offering children a wide range of high-quality experiences is very important; this can highlight hidden talents and interests and also enable students to participate in activities which may not ordinarily be accessible to them. It addition, we feel it is important to offer high quality PE teaching from highly trained staff.

2023/24

Last year TMBSS Primary had £8500 Sports Grant.

This level of funding enabled us to offer weekly specialist PE teaching delivered by Embrace staff and the KS2 six-day provision group were also able to access two sessions with Arthog Outreach.

Impact of the Funding

The teaching of PE by a member of non-TMBSS staff has been invaluable to our students. They only see the PE teacher once a week, but they are learning that we have the same high expectations of behaviour and engagement with this staff member as we do with all TMBSS staff. This is important as many of our mainstream partner schools use alternative providers to teach PE in order to release staff for their Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time. The lessons being led by Embrace staff also enables TMBSS teaching and support staff to support their students to ensure they are able to fully participate and overcome any barriers they may have. The annual sports day, with medals winners, was a huge success with lots of team work, sportsmanship and resilience witnessed.

The Arthog Outreach sessions were highlights of the year for both staff and pupils. The experiences highlighted a range of fears, lack of resilience for some students, the need to overcome barriers around trying an activity for the first time but it also highlighted the empathetic side to many of the students and they oozed a sense of sportsmanship and pride. All students, and staff, achieved so much more than they ever thought, and all came away with a shared sense of achievement to be proud of.

2024/2025

This year TMBSS Primary have £8000 Sports Grant.

This year we will continue to employ a specialist PE teacher to deliver our PE curriculum. This will replicate the experience that many of our young people have of being taught by a different member of staff for PE which we hope will better equip them for the return to their mainstream school or transfer to a new setting. The KS2 six-day provision group will also access termly Arthog Outreach sessions.

Swimming

We did not offer swimming teaching to our students in the academic year 2023/2024 due to the change in the commissioned model set by the Local Authority.

Our 2023/24 Year 6 cohort consisted of 8 students who attended on a time limited placement, either on a full-time or part-time basis, over the course of the year.

The percentage of pupils within the 2023/24 Year 6 cohort that could do each of the following (as specified by parents on the TMBSS admission forms):

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 50%

  • Use a range of strokes effectively: 50%

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations: Unknown
